STEP 3 Add the First Layer of Pastel

Use the sides of the pastel sticks with gentle, light strokes to apply many layers. Begin with the dark areas using a very dark green in the large trees, and let some of the violet show through. With a dark green and dark violet, lay in the shadows under the trees. Move to the midground trees on the right and add dark violet in the shadow areas. Paint the midground hills with a light warm brown on the sun side and a medium brown on the shade side.

Still using a light touch, use a medium blue-violet in the distant mountains. Now take the dark turquoise used in the sky to paint the long foreground shadow. Add light turquoise between the distant mountains and the dark sky.

Use a light yellow and cut into the edges of the right trees. Extend the yellow to near the center of the board. Take a light pink color and gently connect the yellow and turquoise of the sky. Add a very light brown to the sunny streak going across the painting.
